Sailors and Excursions
Cancer patients are our “Sailors” and their respites are “excursions.” To be considered for an excursion, a Sailor must:
- Have a physician diagnosis of cancer
- Be between the ages of 24-50
- Reside in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Delaware
View a full list of our Program Guidelines to see if you, or some one you know, can be a potential Sailor.
Crossing the Finish Line works individually with each Sailor, and his or her family, to plan unique excursions. All nominations must be made by a health care professional who is a member of the Sailor’s oncology team. Candidates for Sailors who do not meet our standard criteria will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by our Program Committee.
Currently, we send Sailors to the CFL home in Davenport, Florida, as well as to donated homes and resorts including select locations in the Pennsylvania Poconos, Jersey shore, California, and North Carolina.
What an Excursion includes:
- One week’s accommodations for the Sailors and primary caregiver, and for the Sailor’s children, when feasible.
- All expenses related to the excursion, including associated travel costs.
- Excursion Basket containing a generous stipend for the week ($100 per day, on average), toiletries, robes, journals and pens, camera, and inspirational writings related to the journey.
- Limousine ride to and from the airport that adds to the fun and leisure of the excursion.
- We present each family with a DVD memorial of the excursion and provide additional support, as needed through our Port Support program.
